Annual CEHS Scholarship and Awards Banquet Honors Donors, Students, and College Award Recipients, Including Utah’s First Lady Abby Palmer Cox

On September 23, the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) hosted its annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet to celebrate the recipients of the college’s most prestigious awards, the dedicated students who received scholarships this year, and their generous donors. For the 2025 Fall semester, CEHS awarded more than 550 scholarships to students in the college, totaling nearly $1.25M. Special guests that night included USU Interim President Al Smith, who is also the endowed dean of CEHS, and former Aggies, Utah Governor and First Lady Spencer and Abby Palmer Cox.

Associate Professors Qi Si and Tye CampbellEducation Professors Awarded Grants to Explore Math and Literacy Teaching Methods of Utah’s Exceptional Teachers 

Tye Campbell and Qi Si, assistant professors in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, were recently awarded ULEAD (Utah Leading through Effective, Actionable, and Dynamic Education) grants from the Utah State Board of Education to explore the literacy and math teaching practices of the most exceptional fourth-grade teachers in Utah’s public school system.

Mimi Recker with student Professor Mimi Recker Receives Prestigious ISLS Fellowship

The International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS), an international and interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the research of learning in all forms, has awarded USU Professor Mimi Recker from the Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences (ITLS) an ISLS Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of learning sciences. Recker is the first professor from USU to receive the distinguished fellowship.

Beginning Fall semester 2025, the Nursing Department within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services began offering a one-credit course—Introduction to Nursing as a Career—designed to give undergraduate students an inside look at the nursing profession and to introduce them to a range of career opportunities in the broader healthcare field.

Heather Kelley with Francesca KnudsenResearch Catalyst Grant Fuels Study of “Compassion Compass” to Support Emotional Wellbeing Following Dementia Diagnosis

Heather Kelley, Ph.D. and researcher at the Institute for Disability Research, Policy, and Practice, was recently awarded a Research Catalyst grant from the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Research Center to examine the impact of Compassion Compass, a single-session digital mental health intervention among adults who have recently received a dementia diagnosis.

Edith Bowen Laboratory School Teacher Finalist for Utah’s 2026 Teacher of the Year

Joseph Kozlowski, second-grade teacher at Edith Bowen Laboratory School, a K-6 charter school on the USU campus, was one of five finalists in the selection for the 2026 Utah Teacher of the Year award. The candidate pool encompassed more than 30,000 K-12 public and charter school teachers in the state of Utah. This is the first time a charter school teacher has been a finalist for the statewide recognition.
