Audiology Professor Awarded NIH Grant to Use AI to Identify Hearing Diseases

Aryn Kamerer, assistant professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, has been awarded a three-year Early Career Research grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders within the National Institutes of Health. Her team will use artificial intelligence to distinguish auditory diseases in the inner ear and brain in an effort to provide better care for people with hearing loss and to develop targeted drug-related therapies.

Their methods prioritize hands-on discovery and inquisitiveness because they know that the best way to help children be successful in school is to provide guided, intentional learning to those who will one day be their teachers: students pursuing elementary education degrees.

The Utah Learning for Educators and Researchers through Networked Systems conference (LEARNS) kicked off its second year at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School. The K-6 charter school on the USU Logan campus received a $50,000 three-year innovation grant from the Utah State Charter School Board to help fund the conference. The mission of Utah LEARNS is to connect elementary educators throughout Utah in ways that allow them to share their expertise.

Dr. Beth Fauth collaborates with graduate student.Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Research Center Director Honored as One of “30 Women to Watch” in Utah

In May, Professor Elizabeth Fauth was recognized as one of Utah Business magazine’s “30 Women to Watch.” Fauth is the director of the state-funded Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Research Center (ADRC) and a professor in Human Development and Family Studies. Her research specializes in reducing caregiver stress, addressing symptoms of dementia, and developing mental health interventions. She worked closely with the Utah Legislature to launch the center at USU in 2022.

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Research Center is hosting its second annual health fair focused on Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia awareness and prevention. The fair is a collaborative project with USU faculty who have expertise in psychology, aging, neuroscience, nutrition, caregiving, and more. The health fair will be an excellent resource for people who are experiencing memory loss and those who care for them.

Mother and Son Navajo Students Earn Master’s Degrees From ITLS

CIn May 2024 and 2025, the Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services bestowed graduate degrees on Tylan Dee (2024) and Tonie Dee (2025), a mother/son pair whose non-traditional journeys through higher education demonstrate dedication, discipline, and perseverance.
