Special Showing of Singin’ in the Rain at the Utah Theatre for People With Dementia and Their Caregivers
People with memory impairment, their caregivers, and their families are invited to a special showing
of the classic film Singin in the Rain at Logan's Utah Theatre on August 20.
The Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Research Center (ADRC), a state-funded center housed within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University, is hosting a movie night for individuals with dementia or memory impairment and their caregivers. This event is in collaboration with the Utah chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Utah Theatre in downtown Logan.
The classic 1952 film “Singin’ in the Rain,” starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, August 20, at the Utah Theatre, located at 18 West Center Street in downtown Logan. Doors will open at 12 noon. The event is free of charge and includes a complimentary drink and popcorn.
“Our goal is to provide an opportunity for meaningful social interaction where people dealing with the same challenges can meet, mingle, and enjoy the movie together,” says Becka Schultz, program manager of the Utah chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The event has been designed to accommodate the needs of individuals experiencing dementia so that it is both safe and entertaining. To better assist all attendees, representatives of the ADRC and the Alzheimer’s Association will serve as ushers and parking attendants. To enhance accessibility for individuals with hearing impairment, the film will be presented with subtitles. In addition, the lights in the theatre will be dimmed but not totally darkened to help alleviate any confusion for attendees.
The movie showing is also designed to support caregivers by giving them an opportunity to enjoy an activity with their loved one and get a break from their daily routine.
“Being a caregiver of someone with dementia can be very isolating,” says Dr. Beth Fauth, director of the ADRC. “We want to create opportunities for caregivers to meet and connect with others who are experiencing this same thing. We also want to provide a space where their loved ones will feel safe and comfortable.”
Because it is sure to be familiar to most of the older attendees, Singin’ in the Rain, a musical production known for its showstopping music and timeless love story, is the film of choice for this event. Viewers will be encouraged to sing along and even get up and dance while they watch the film, if they wish.
