ITLS Professor David Feldon Presents Inaugural Lecture

David Feldon, a professor of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, recently presented his inaugural lecture in the home of Noelle and John Cockett, president and first gentleman of Utah State University, to commemorate his promotion to full professor.

Dr. Feldon’s path to a lifetime studying education expertise began as an undergraduate student at Johns Hopkins University, where a young Feldon was introduced to the field of cognitive science. After graduation, he returned home to southern California and began working in the “dot-com bubble,” eventually finding a position selling software technology to classroom teachers.

One day, while struggling with a particularly stubborn teacher, Feldon realized he either needed “more gray in my hair or more letters after my name if I was going to have any impact in education.” Feldon went on to earn an M.S. degree in instructional technology and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Southern California.

After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA, Dr. Feldon spent time at the University of South Carolina and the University of Virginia. In 2013, Dr. Feldon joined the staff at Utah State University and moved with his family to Logan.

While working on his doctoral degree at USC, Dr. Feldon was mentored by Dr. Richard Clark, whom he credited with setting the early course of his research. Dr. Feldon also credited Dr. Margaret Gredler with taking him under her wing and teaching him the importance of grinding through the hard work of academic writing during his first faculty position in South Carolina.

At the end of his presentation, Dr. Feldon individually thanked his family and colleagues who were present for the celebration.
