Dean Alan Smith recently announced expanded roles for the current Associate Deans for the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, along with the appointment of David Feldon as a new Associate Dean.

As the college adjusts to changes after Executive Associate Dean Shelley Lindauer’s retirement, Dean Smith introduced the Associate Deans and their newly expanded roles at the college-wide annual retreat on August 18. He has expressed gratitude for Dr. Lindauer’s tireless and highly-effective support, including her ongoing consulting on projects such as the Nursing expansion in the Logan HPER building.

Each of the four Associate Deans will take responsibility for a different area of the college in order to help strengthen its academic programs, support its students, and maximize its impact on people and communities.

Learn about each of the Associate Deans and their roles below.

David Feldon, Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences

Associate Dean for Graduate Studies

In his new role, Dr. Feldon will oversee all essential functions of the college related to graduate education. Dean Smith stated that Dr. Feldon’s scholarly expertise in graduate education, as well as his strong commitment to graduate student success, will greatly benefit the college’s efforts to conceptualize and implement strategic priorities in this area.

Gretchen Peacock, Psychology

Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Clinical Programs

In executing her faculty development role, Dr. Peacock will oversee and develop structures and processes that enable faculty success over the career lifespan. This is a newly formalized role within the college leadership team that will be supported directly by Dean Smith and the other Associate Deans. Dr. Peacock will continue her oversight of the Sorenson Center and the college’s clinical initiatives.

Sylvia Read, School of Teacher Education and Leadership

Dr. Read’s knowledge of accreditation processes and her engagement with state and national governing bodies make her an invaluable resource to departments and programs that maintain accreditation at both undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to continuing to offer college-level oversight and support in this area, she will also oversee all essential functions of the college related to undergraduate education.

Shawn Whiteman, Human Development and Family Studies

Associate Dean for Research and Innovation

Dr. Whiteman has been supporting scholarly initiatives in his leadership position overseeing the college’s Office of Research Services and supporting scholarly initiatives. In his new extended leadership role, Dr. Whiteman will promote connections with appropriate industry partners, support entrepreneurial initiatives, and facilitate technology transfer and unique forms of research translation.
