Graduate Route to Licensure

About Graduate Route to Licensure

Science

The Graduate Route to Licensure (GRL) Master of Education (M.Ed.) is a program designed for persons with a bachelor's degree in a science area who desire to become a secondary science teacher. This program provides students the opportunity to acquire all coursework needed for certification as a science teacher while also completing a Plan C Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. Students in this program complete 39 semester credits of education courses, which include science teaching methods courses and a student teaching semester. In addition, students in this program are required to complete any additional courses required for certification in their specific science discipline. Students interested in learning more about the program can see the GRL Science Program of Study or contact the advisor.

Admissions

GRL students will be considered for admission on a rolling basis with admissions decisions made when all application materials have been received.

GRL Admissions Requirements

  • Mathematics – Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering Discipline with 18 credits of Math classes at or above calculus

Steps to Apply:

  1. Meet with a content area advisor in your area of licensure (teaching subject) prior to beginning the application process. Establish a contract for completing Licensing Content Coursework and submit contract to advisor.
  2. Apply for graduate admission through the School of Graduate Studies (3.0 GPA, Letters of Recommendation, transcripts).

  4. Complete FBI Background Check and submit documentation to advisor.

Graduate Route to Licensure Course Evaluation Policy (note: this is written specifically for the Science GRL, but similar requirements are expected of the MMath applicants)

If students with a science teaching area degree (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc) have science coursework needed for licensure that will be more than 8 years old at the time of graduation from the master's degree program, they must provide convincing evidence that they have kept current in their subject by providing one of the following:

  1. Completion of up to 5 core science courses selected by the College of Science advisor that will provide current understanding in the most critical subject areas for teaching. OR
  2. A short written statement providing strong evidence that the student has kept current, since completion of their earlier course work, in their intended science teaching subject. Note: For students with a science-related degree (Wildlife Science, Animal Science etc.), transcripts will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis for content and currency in meeting endorsement equivalency.

Credit Restrictions

The following restrictions should be understood by all students who are taking master’s level courses but have not been admitted to a master’s degree program. Admitted students must also be aware of these credit restrictions.

  • No more than 12 semester graduate credits taken prior to acceptance into a graduate program (“non-matriculated credits”) may be counted toward the master's degree.
  • Six credits can be transferred into a master’s degree from another institution, but up to 12 may be allowed with prior approval.
  • A maximum of 8 workshop credits can be counted as part of a master’s degree. This includes TEPD or CETE courses.
  • Under no circumstances may 5000 level coursework from another institution be counted toward the master’s degree.
  • P/F grades will be accepted only for seminars, special problems, interdisciplinary workshops, thesis research, and continuing graduate advisement.
  • Coursework taken more than 8 years prior to the time of graduation cannot be applied toward master's degree.
