Graduate Coursework in Literacy

USU offers many graduate courses in the field of literacy. A student can take any of these courses as electives for a MEd degree.

The following literacy education graduate courses are offered. Required courses for the Literacy Education specialization within the Master’s of Science degree are indicated with a “REQ".

  • TEAL 6350 Literacy Assessment and Intervention (Spring) REQ
  • TEAL 6381 Effective Writing Instruction (Fall, odd years) REQ
  • TEAL 6570 Evidence-Based K-12 Comprehension Instruction (Spring, odd years) REQ
  • Select one from these options:
TEAL 6321 Theories and Models of Literacy for K-12 Instruction (waived if LETRS training; Fall)
TEAL 6323 Literacy Education Teacher Training and Development (Summer, even years)

TEAL 6390 Building K-12 Literacy through Fiction and Non-Fiction Texts (Summer, odd years)

There are several ways to take literacy courses at USU: (1) as a non-matriculated graduate student, (2) as a C & I master's degree student with the literacy courses used as electives, or (3) as a Master of Science C & I student with the literacy specialization.

To become a non-matriculated graduate student, you must complete an online application here: http://rgs.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply/. Browse all instructions for the application. To apply for the master's degree program, you must apply to the School of Graduate Studies: http://rgs.usu.edu/graduateschool/apply/.

We highly recommend that you pursue the second path. If you start taking classes as a non-matriculated student, please be aware that if you change your mind and decide to enroll in the master's program, only 12 of the non-matriculated credits can be transferred into your master's degree program.
