Literacy Education Concentration

PhD in Education

The Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration in the Doctoral Program of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services is an advanced program designed to prepare literacy leaders for the following positions in literacy education: academic positions as faculty at universities, leadership positions in state-level agencies or professional associations, school literacy leadership positions including coaches, and educational consulting.

The Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration PhD program is designed for working professionals, with all eight courses offered in the evenings and summers. Courses are offered on a regular schedule so that students can complete this concentration within their course of doctoral studies. All courses in the Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration will be offered through the Statewide Campuses and the Distance Education broadcast network. Listed below are the courses that constitute the Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration:

  • TEAL 7321 Foundations of Language and Literacy
  • TEAL 7322 Research in Literacy
  • TEAL 7323 Literacy Education Teaching Training and Development
  • TEAL 7324 Advanced Studies in Literacy Assessment and Intervention
  • TEAL 7326 Designing and Conducting Literacy Research: A Capstone Experience
  • TEAL 7327 Literacy Research Apprenticeship
  • TEAL 7820 Special Topics

In conjunction with the chair of their dissertation, research students will create a Program of Study complete with Literacy Education and Leadership courses, Curriculum and Instruction courses, and Research courses.
