Literacy Education and Leadership

PhD in Education

The Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration in the Doctoral Program of the School of Teacher Education and Leadership in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services is an advanced program designed to prepare literacy leaders for the following positions in literacy education: academic positions as faculty at universities, leadership positions in state-level agencies or professional associations, school literacy leadership positions including coaches, and educational consulting.

The Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration PhD program is designed for working professionals, with courses offered in the evenings and summers. All courses in the Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration are offered to students who enroll at the statewide sampuses and the Utah State University main campus in Logan. Listed below are the updated courses that constitute the Literacy Education and Leadership Concentration. Required courses for the Literacy Education and Leadership specialization within the doctoral degree are indicated with a “REQ”:

  • TEAL 7320 Theories and Models of Literacy (Fall, even years) REQ 
  • TEAL 7321 Foundations of Literacy and Oral Language Development (Spring, odd years) REQ
  • TEAL 7322 Research in Literacy (Fall, odd years) REQ 
  • TEAL 7324 Advanced Studies in Assessment and Intervention (Spring, even years) REQ 
  • TEAL 7380 Writing Research and Instruction (Fall, odd years) REQ 
  • TEAL 7570 K-12 Comprehension Research (Spring, odd years) REQ 
  • TEAL 7326 Designing and Conducting Literacy Research: A Capstone Experience (arranged with literacy faculty) REQ
  • TEAL 7323 Literacy Education Teacher Preparation and Development (Summer, even years)
  • TEAL 7390 Researching K-12 Literacy through Fiction and Non-Fiction Texts (Summer, odd years)

In conjunction with the Supervisory Committee Chair of their dissertation, students will create a Program of Study complete with Literacy Education and Leadership courses, Curriculum and Instruction courses, and Research courses.
