Biography
Kathy Cabe Trundle’s leadership in science education spans over 40 years and includes 10 years of public school teaching in the state of Tennessee. Before joining the faculty at Utah State University, she served as a Department Head and Professor at North Carolina State University (5 years) and as a Professor in Early Childhood Science Education at The Ohio State University (13 years). With more than 200 scholarly publications (e.g., research articles, book chapters, books, several textbook series with National Geographic), she has delivered more than 80 invited presentations and keynote addresses at national and international (China, Indonesia, Italy, New Zealand, Turkey) conferences, and two Fulbright Fellowships supported her research in Indonesia. Her love of nature and adventurous spirit took her on safaris in Tanzania and Rwanda, where she hiked among the Mountain Gorillas and volcanoes.
Research Interests
With an area of expertise in Science Education, Cabe Trundle’s major research interests include early childhood and elementary science teaching and learning and the accessibility of science for all learners. Grounded in conceptual change theory, her work focuses on cognition and the teaching and learning of science concepts in interdisciplinary contexts. She has conducted specific studies on conceptual understanding and change across various age levels (grades PreK-16), in a variety of instructional contexts, in different science content areas, and with special populations. Her current research focuses on the integration of technology and art into STEM (STEAM) learning, and recent United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funding supports her research team as they explore school garden-based learning, biodiversity, and sustainability with PreK-12 students and teachers. Her grant funding totals over $26.5 million ($23.8M in current federal funding).
