Synopsis

Louis Braille isn't on many lists of famous inventors, but he should be. Just like any engineer, Braille identified an inefficient system (reading for the blind) and worked to improve it, all on his own. Many readers might not realize that Braille finalized his alphabet as a child, while still in school. Today, with so many methods of communication "at our fingertips," braille is still a valuable go-to for the vision impaired. This is a great book to start an engineering design challenge with -- asking students to reimagine systems as Louis Braille did could be a great way to start the unit.
