About the Lab
For individuals with neurological impairments or diseases (e.g. stroke or Parkinson’s disease), the ability to produce intelligible speech can be significantly affected. In the Motor Speech Lab, we examine speech production changes that occur due to difficulties with the control and execution of muscle movements. Our work explores measurements of the acoustic speech signal, listener responses to disordered speech, and speaker strategies for producing clear speech patterns. Current lab projects are examining how speakers change their speech patterns when rephrasing sentences, and how listeners’ effort and engagement influences their perception of disordered speech. By understanding how different speakers adapt their speech production in response to listener feedback, we hope to gain insight into how best to tailor treatment approaches to individual patterns of communication disorder.
