General Questions

Should I still apply if I have a poor GRE and/or GPA?

The admissions committee looks at all applications. A number of qualifications, including your GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, experience, and personal attributes will be evaluated. The GRE is not required for individuals applying to the AuD Program.

Can I get a master's degree on a part-time basis?

There is no part-time program.

Can I get a clinical doctoral degree on a part-time basis?

There is no part-time program for the AuD.

How much is tuition?

In addition to regular tuition, there will also be differential tuition for COMDDE courses. Refer to page 9 of the tuition table. Graduate students from participating states may qualify for a WRGP non-resident tuition waiver.

What is the minimum GPA for admittance into the program?

Students must have a 3.0 or better for the last 60 credits. Competitive GPAs are often much higher.

What are the minimum requirements for the GRE for admittance into the program?

Verbal, Quantitative, and Writing (Analytic) scores are required. At least one of Verbal and Quantitative scores must be above the 40th percentile. Competitive scores are often much higher. GRE scores with accompanying percentiles can be viewed through the ETS website. The GRE is not required for individuals applying to the AuD Program.

Audiology

What are the prerequisites for the AuD degree?

Students pursuing an AuD degree in Audiology must have a Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders or the equivalent undergraduate prerequisite courses, either from USU or another accredited university.

Does your program accept students with undergraduate degrees in a field other than communicative disorders?

A student with a bachelor’s degree in another field who desires to receive an AuD degree in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education (COMDDE) must have completed the prerequisite courses prior to acceptance into the AuD degree program.

What is the application deadline?

The application deadline is January 15th.

What should I include in my personal statement?

Your letter of intent that is part of your online graduate school application should specifically reflect your educational and professional interests and qualifications. Detailed information about prior professional experience, research experience, teaching experience, related service, other degrees, etc. will help those evaluating your application to have a more detailed and accurate perception of your qualifications. Your personal statement should also reflect your best writing skills.

How can I apply for departmental awards and scholarships?

Scholarships and assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Recipients are chosen based on academic performance, work related experience, and research interests. More information is available on the department funding page.

When will I be notified of the admissions decision?

Students will be notified of their acceptance status by March 20th. A ranked waiting list of alternates will be specified in addition to the numbers initially accepted. Accepted students will need to notify the department formally of their intent to enroll by April 15. As space becomes available, the alternate list will be utilized for replacements. On average, 6-8 Audiology students will be accepted into the program.

What is the usual duration of study for the Doctor of Audiology degree in your department?

The program is a four-year post-baccalaureate residency program. The first 3 years of study will be at Utah State University consisting of coursework and clinical internships and externships. The final year will be a full time 4th year externship experience.

How many of your students pass the Praxis Exam each year?

The COMDDE Praxis Exam pass rate is reported on the department website.

When are students expected to enter the program? Is it possible to begin any other time?

Students may only enter the program in the fall.

Speech-Language Pathology

What are the prerequisites for the Master's degree?

Students pursuing a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology must have a Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders or the equivalent undergraduate prerequisite courses, either from USU or another accredited university.

Does your program accept students with undergraduate degrees in a field other than communicative disorders?

A student with a bachelor’s degree in another field who desires to receive a MA/MS degree in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education (COMDDE) must have completed the prerequisite courses prior to acceptance into the graduate degree program. 

What is the application deadline?

The application deadline is January 15.

Students begin the master’s program in the Summer Semester (June). This is the only admissions date.

What if I am presently interested in only taking a few courses but not applying for admission to a graduate program?

USU offers online courses for the undergraduate and second-bachelor’s degrees; however, the graduate courses are not available online.

What is the SLP Outreach Program?

The Outreach graduate program is supported by the Utah State Office of Education (USOE). The availability of State Office of Education funding, through federal flow through money, will not be known until approximately April. If State Office of Education funding is not available, or is significantly reduced, there will be no outreach broadcast program and the newly accepted outreach students would be offered an on-campus space in the graduate program instead.

Is the tuition for the Outreach program the same as the on-campus Master's program?

Tuition will be the same as in the on-campus university graduate program..

What is the usual duration of study at the master's level in your department?

How many new Outreach students will be accepted?

In addition to accepting campus-based SLP students, COMDDE also accepts a limited number (5-7) of Outreach graduate students

Is there a work requirement for the Outreach program?

Accepted students must be speech technicians working for rural and under-served Utah school districts who participate in most courses through USU’s broadcast distance education.

Do I have to be employed by a school district before I apply to the Outreach program?

Yes, employment as a speech-language technician in a rural or high need district within the state of Utah is required.

Can I apply to both the Outreach master's program and the on-campus master's program at the same time?

Yes. You may indicate in your letter of intent that you wish to apply for both programs. Please explain which program you would prefer. Your application will be considered first for the program that is your priority. If you are not accepted into that program, and there are still openings in the other program, your application will then be considered for the second program.

What courses do Outreach students take?

Outreach students take the same courses every semester as campus-based students.
