Biography

I am a professor in HDFS and Director of the Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Research Center. I have a BS in Psychology (Syracuse University), Masters and PhD in Human Development & Family Studies (Penn State University).

Teaching Interests

I have taught classes in face-to-face formats, as well as interactive broadcast, and online. Classes include: Adult Development and Aging (FCHD 3540); Social and Family Gerontology (FCHD 4240); Development across the Lifespan (FCHD 1500); Graduate Aging Seminar (FCHD 6900/7900); Graduate Research Methodology (FCHD 6030); Graduate Adult Development and Aging (FCHD 6540/7540); Study Abroad in Sweden: Healthcare and Social Services (FCHD 5550); and Introduction to Psychological and Educational Research Methods (EDUC 6570)

Research Interests

FAMILY CAREGIVING: Studies include observing daily behavior problems in people with dementia and their impact on the caregiver's well-being. I have also observed patterns of how these daily behavior problems and the caregiver's daily stress appraisals of these behaviors change over time. I create and evaluate caregiver interventions, most recently online, self-guided programs based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I am also interested in studies involving people with dementia, for example in optimizing quality of life through activities and interaction, uncovering how aspects of the caregiver and the caregiving environment affect the progression of dementia, and predictors of dementia progression. DAILY FUNCTIONING AND LATE-LIFE DISABILITY: I collaborate with the Institute for Gerontology at Jonkoping University in Sweden, and have done cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses several large datasets. Primary interests have been to evaluate the Disablement Process model in predicting functional independence and disability in the oldest old, to observe and predict patterns of health and functional decline in this age group, and to test the role of psychosocial variables, such as mastery, well-being, and social support as buffers in the disablement process. I have also collaborated on projects that examine the interface between cognition and functional tasks, such as gait and fine motor movements.
