Requirements for Admission

The Elementary Education K-6 and Early Childhood Education PreK-3 programs require certain courses to be completed before admission to the official major. Students must be in their final semester of completing these courses to be able to apply. Students will be admitted provisionally before registration for the next semester, but admission to the program is still contingent on completion of their courses. 

General Education: C or Higher in ALL of the Following Courses
-Breadth American Institution 
-Breadth Humanities 
-Breadth Creative Arts 
-Breadth Life Sciences 
-Breadth Physical Sciences (PHYS 1200 desired for Logan & Eastern Campuses)
-Breadth Social Sciences (HDFS 1500 required)

Communications Literacy: C+ or Higher in at least ONE of the Following Courses
-ENGL 1010 (CL1)
-ENGL 2010 or 2020 (CL2)

Quantitative Literacy: C- or Higher in One of the Following Courses:
-(QL) such as MATH 1030, STAT 1040, MATH 1050, MATH 1051, etc.

ELED Preparation Courses
-ELED 1010 (B- or higher)
-MATH 2010 (C or higher)
-MATH 2020 (C or higher)

How to Apply

  • Meet with your Elementary Academic Advisor and fill out the Advisor Approval Form. 
  • Start Your FBI/BCI Teacher Background Check
    • Make an Account with USIMS (Utah State Board of Education)
    • In USIMS, go to Personal Information, and mark "Utah State University" as your Utah Teacher Education Program
    • Sign up for a Livescan Fingerprinting with USU Police (Logan Campus) 
    • Bring your CACTUS ID to the Livescan Appointment (found in Personal Information in USIMS) 
    • NOTE-Background checks can take up to 6 weeks to clear
  • Subscribe to the ELED/ECED Email Listserv
    • (Screenshot the confirmation email)
  • Upload the following documents & fill out the ELED/ECED Program Application
    • Signed Advisor Approval Form
    • Screenshot of ELED/ECED Email Listserv confirmation
    • Screenshot of FBI/BCI Teacher Background Check Clearance Date in USIMS
    • Click "UPLOAD" for each document AFTER you upload them.
  • Deadline for Spring Admission: October 10th
  • Deadlines for Fall Admission: March 18th & May 10th
