Content Area Connections:

Language Arts: Describe characters, settings, and events using details from the text and illustrations. Compare characters’ experiences with students’ own lives and communities. Retell key events using clear sequencing and supporting details. 
Social Studies: compare how people lived in the past and how they live today, use stories to analyze a diverse range of key historical figures, distinguish between needs and wants, community roles/rules, contributions from diverse groups, use primary sources to infer meaning, show examples of responsible community members resolving conflicts, cultures and communities within the US, how people adapt and interact with their environment, examine indigenous peoples and histories, how culture shapes worldview and daily life. 
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): Recognize and describe characters’ emotions and perspectives (social awareness). Reflect on identity, belonging, and respect for diverse cultures. Discuss how individuals contribute to their communities and relationships (relationship skills). Practice empathy by considering how characters respond to challenges.
Art: Interpret how illustrations communicate identity, culture, and community experiences. Examine how artists use color, line, and composition to represent people and settings. Create self-portraits or community scenes that express personal identity and cultural experiences through visual choices.
