Synopsis

The Brooklyn Bridge is an engineering marvel, and one of the first of its kind. While students might not all be familiar with this specific bridge, they have likely crossed many bridges like it. Twenty-One Elephants tells the story of the early days of the Brooklyn Bridge, when many people didn't feel safe enough to cross it. P.T. Barnum sensed an opportunity to promote his circus while capitalizing on public interest in the bridge, and led twenty-one elephants across. This is a great story for students who are interested in engineering, animals, and circuses. It's a great prelude to discussions about how inventions are tested today!
