ASL Minor

Learning another language is a great asset to any career and American Sign Language (ASL) is no exception.  The coursework to earn the ASL Minor will lead to proficiency in ASL and awareness of Deaf culture.  Aspects of Deaf culture, Deaf history, ASL history, linguistics, ASL folklore and literature, and pragmatics are covered in the ASL courses through a total immersion approach.

The ASL Minor is only available as a campus offering. For basic communicative proficiency, ASL I and ASL II (1010 and 1020) continue to be offered in both face-to-face and online formats. ASL III and ASL IV (2010 and 2020) will be available only as face-to-face campus courses.  ASL 4780 will be offered as an online-only course.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all of the courses required for the ASL Minor. To meet the residency requirement for the Minor, students must complete at least two of the required courses through USU.

ASL Course Rotation Schedule

As of Fall 2026, ASL courses move to lower division numbering and no longer meet the Communicative Intensive (CI) designation.
***PLEASE NOTE: FOR REGISTRATION, SIGN LANGUAGE 1 WILL STILL BE ASL 3010 FOR SUMMER 2026 AND ASL 1010 FOR FALL 2026.
