Listening and Spoken Language Deaf Education Post-Master's Certificate
The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers an online Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Deaf Education Post-Master’s Certificate program for currently licensed deaf educators, special educators, and speech-language pathologists to develop the knowledge and skills to provide effective evidence-based LSL services to young children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). To fulfill program requirements, students must be employed in, or have access to, a setting that serves young children who are DHH who use LSL.
Program Overview
- There are 4 graduate-level classes, plus practicum (18 credit hours) required in the program of study. All classes are offered asynchronous online.
- The program is completed in one academic year. The program begins Fall semester.
- Students fulfill the practicum requirements in their employment setting continent upon meeting program participation eligibility. The USU practicum supervisor connects with students on a regular basis to provide support throughout the year. This helps to facilitate theory to practice as students utilize the concepts learned in the coursework and apply them to the children they are serving.
- Students meet as a group 2-3 times per semester using zoom to discuss program components and to reinforce concept implementation across a variety of settings.
- The course content is most applicable to professionals who provide services to early intervention, preschool, or early elementary age children.

Upon program completion, students earn a Post-Master’s Certificate in LSL Deaf Education Services. In some states, this Certificate can support eligibility for additional endorsements, credentials, certificates, or licenses. However, there is wide variability in state educator licensing requirements and USU does not guarantee if or how this Certificate may be used toward state professional offerings. Students are encouraged to contact their state educational licensing office to discuss and confirm options.
