Hey there, I’m Ben.  I work with students whose last names start with D-M

Welcome to USU! We’re excited you’re here, either here on campus, or here online. There are a lot of new things to remember.  But don’t worry, we are here to help!

Let’s talk about your first semester and getting started. You might have some concurrent enrollment or AP courses finished, or in progress, or be coming in with a blank slate on your college transcript.  Let’s see if we can answer your questions and get your first-semester schedule all settled.
You’ve likely gone over general education in your orientation modules, but now we’re going to dig deeper into it as it pertains to you.

If you have taken Engl 1010 or AP Lang (and passed with a 3+) you can skip this paragraph. If not, consider adding Engl 1010 to your schedule plan.

Math or Quantitative Literacy, as it’s called in general education. Psychology majors need to complete one of these: Stat 1040, Stat 1045, or Stat 1080. If you have completed Math 1040 or AP Stat, you can skip this section. If you haven’t completed your math, you’ll likely need to take the ALEKS math placement exam. You can find out how to do that here:
https://www.usu.edu/mathprep/aleks-ppl  You’ll need to earn a 14+ to enroll in Stat 1045 or 30+ to enroll in Stat 1040 or 1080. You won’t be able to enroll in the Stat class until you have a “passing” score on the ALEKS. Even if you have your QL requirement met with Math 1050 or another math course, you will need to take one of the statistics courses as a prerequisite to Psy 3010:Psychological Statistics.

Connections or USU 1010

                   Caricature of Tressa

USU 1010, also known as "Connections" is a great intro course to get you started with USU. Most of the hours are completed in the three days before Fall semester classes begin. Then, there are check-ins with your group throughout the semester. This is a great way to have a Peer mentor, a connections instructor, and a group that you are familiar with to start your college career.

Dont miss the lumniary. It's Amazing!

Resources

Remember, USU has lots of great resources just waiting for you to find them. Here is a place to start!

One of your most important resources is your Academic Advisor. We are here to answer all kinds of questions and to help you find the answers you need. It’s a great idea to check in with your advisor at least once each semester. We offer advising via email, in person, phone, or zoom.

A good general rule to keep in mind is:

Caricature of Ben     - For Fall planning schedule before St. Patrick’s day or you might be unlucky in registration.

caricature of Becca     - For Summer planning, schedule before Christmas as a gift to yourself.

Caricature of Ben     - For Spring planning, schedule before Halloween or registration might be scary.
