Living in Logan

Logan is home to Utah State University’s first campus and is the hub of Cache Valley. Cache Valley is a traditional college town with an agricultural heart. Residents enjoy four distinct seasons including hot summers and snowy winters. Logan is surrounded by many restaurants, shopping centers, and hiking trails all within a ten-minute commute of the university. Our vibrant and growing community is the center of many small towns and the heart of northern Utah. Logan also has a bustling art, culture, and theater scene both on campus and off. Residents enjoy weekend gardener’s markets, numerous festivals, and concerts. 

One of the main highlights of living in Logan is the accessibility to many outdoor recreational activities. Logan canyon offers a multitude of adventures right from our backyard; beautiful hiking and biking trails, cliffs for rock climbing, and miles of scenic views for drives up to Bear Lake. In the winter months, our students have access to 10 major ski resorts such as Beaver Mountain and Cherry Peak Resort. The slower lifestyle in Logan allows students to pursue unique recreation and hobbies outside of their studies.  

If you want to spend time outdoors but don’t have the equipment, the Aggie Recreational Center (ARC) offers equipment rentals at a discounted price for students. USU has many outdoor programs that organize recreational trips, teach courses in various outdoor skills, and helps you connect to other students and the regional environment. Many students learn how to ski, golf, slackline, rock climb, kayak, or simply find a love for the world around them during their time at USU.

Many of our faculty and students don’t call Logan home. There are many out of state undergrad students, and our school counseling program is designed for students all around the state. If you are interested in attending USU outside of Logan, there are still many resources and perks to living in Utah. Utah is home to five national parks – Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Bryce. You can visit southern Utah or Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in just a few hours’ drive so many of our students visit the national parks on the weekends or for spring break. Utah has something for everyone! If you are a big fan of skiing, you can’t beat the best snow on earth. For those of you not as interested in winter sports, a few hours drive down to sunny southern Utah during the winter months is the perfect get away.  

Logan is roughly 80 miles from the many amenities of  Salt Lake City, Utah including the airport and more traditional shopping options. Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Jazz professional basketball team, Salt Lake Bees minor league baseball team, and Real Salt Lake soccer team. Park City, Utah hosts the Sundance Film Festival each year and was the home of the 2002 Olympics and is only 110 miles from your front door.
