Tyler Lefevor Receives Fellowship from Public Religion Research Institute

Tyler Lefevor

Dr. Tyler Lefevor has been awarded a fellowship from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI). The PRRI Public Fellowship promotes and supports interdisciplinary public scholarship through a cohort of emerging scholar-leaders in social science and humanities. PRRI Public Fellows support scholarship across PRRI’s four major areas of work, including religious, racial, and ethnic pluralism; religion and white supremacy; immigration policy and migration studies; and LGBTQ rights.

“This fellowship is an excellent opportunity to challenge myself to translate my research on how religion, gender, and sexuality can impact health to more general audiences,” said Lefevor, an Assistant Professor with the Utah State University Department of Psychology.

PRRI offers financial support to its scholars, including an annual stipend and annual microgrants to foster collaborative new scholarship and professional relationships amongst the cohort. As a PRRI fellow, Lefevor will have advanced access to major media outlets and leaders of community advocacy groups, and he will receive communications support from PRRI staff. Fellows also receive advanced access to PRRI data and archives as well as quantitative support.

“So often, being a researcher means spending hours collecting data and figuring out what they mean. I’m excited to get training to understand how my work fits in the larger national picture and to help me share it more effectively,” said Lefevor.

The 2021-22 cohort of PRRI Public Fellows is the first cohort as part of the organization’s new Religion and Renewing Democracy initiative. Lefevor is joined by 15 additional interdisciplinary scholars from around the United States.

“The nation is at a crossroads where core values such as pluralism, representative democracy, equality, and public trust in our institutions are under attack from both outside and within,” said PRRI CEO and Founder Robert P. Jones. “The PRRI Public Fellows program will equip and empower our scholars to foster a healthier public understanding about who we are—and who we want to be—as a nation at this difficult point in our history.”
