The Psychology Department is committed to the development of new knowledge regarding the bases of behavior, psychological processes, and the dissemination and application of that knowledge. To accomplish these goals, the department strives to advance programs of excellence in teaching, research, and service within the context of its undergraduate program and graduate specializations, as well as the goals of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University.
Psychology Mission I
As an academic department within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, the Department of Psychology is committed to making scientifically-based contributions to the general, liberal and professional education of students throughout the University. The Department strives to meaningfully contribute to the teacher education programs of the College and the general, education goals of the University. The Department is dedicated to continually demonstrating to students the importance of understanding behavior and psychological processes (e.g., basic learning processes, physiological bases of behavior, psychosocial influences on behavior, interpersonal relationship factors). Students develop knowledge and critical thinking skills through didactic, laboratory, and practicum training experiences to illustrate the relationship between theory, research, and application.
Psychology Mission II
The Department of Psychology is dedicated to providing a high-quality, functional undergraduate major in Psychology. The department mission emphasizes the importance of providing options to students regarding practical theoretical, and practical knowledge and skills through skill tracks (interpersonal relationship/social skills, applied behavior analysis, and child and family caseworker). However, given that most career paths in Psychology require graduate training, the psychology major is directed toward helping majors meet the knowledge prerequisites of the highly competitive graduate training specializations in Psychology that exist throughout the U.S.
Psychology Mission III
The Department prepares experts who can provide regional and national leadership in the fields of Experimental Psychology (PhD), Combined (Clinical/Counseling/School Psychology) Psychology (PhD), School Psychology (EdS) and School Counseling (MS). Depending upon their chosen specialty, graduate students will be uniquely prepared to assist in the evaluation of diverse educational programs, or they will possess broad, advanced training to provide psychological services to children, adolescents, adults, and families. Where applicable, the Department maintains graduate specializations that meet the highest national accreditation standards. Consistent with the ethnic demography of the intermountain region, the Department commits resources specifically to the recruitment and training of Native American psychologists.
Psychology Mission IV
As an academic unit within a research university, the Psychology Department will provide leadership in developing new knowledge, both in academic arenas of psychology, and the practice of psychology. Faculty maintain active programs of research, scholarship and other professional activities relevant to the advancement of knowledge within their specialty field of Psychology.
Psychology Mission V
To assist in meeting Utah State University's land grant responsibilities, the Psychology Department is committed to making substantial contributions to USU's educational extension programs and general service goals. The quality of the Department of Psychology's specializations and high level of faculty expertise in teaching and consultation significantly impact the general quality for life of Utah's citizens. Additionally, the Department makes major research, service, and consultation contributions to the state, nation, and international community through its interdisciplinary efforts.
