Preparing for Advising Appointment

What to do before, during, and after an advising appointment.

Plan ahead and schedule an appointment online. KHS advisors do not hold walk-in advising, even during registration week. If you stop by to see an advisor, there is a great chance that they already have appointments scheduled for that day and will not be able to see you or answer your phone call. If you have questions, even quick ones, the best option to reach an advisor is to set up an appointment or email them.

After having set up an appointment there are additional steps that you can take before, during, and after your appointment to get the most our of your advising appointment.

Before your academic advising appointment, you should:

  • Think about your educational goals, major options and progress in your courses (if currently enrolled).
  • Prepare questions to ask your academic advisor.
  • Bring necessary materials such as your laptop, paper and pen/pencil for notes, forms to sign, etc.
  • Be familiar with university policies and procedures, academic deadlines and course selections.
  • Know where your appointment is located and whether it is a face-to-face or phone appointment.
  • Check your email for any updates from your advisor concerning your appointment.
  • Plan ahead and be prepared to arrive on time. If you are ten minutes late, you may need to reschedule your appointment.
  • If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, cancel your appointment and schedule a new one.

During your advising appointment, you should:

  • Participate and be engaged in the advising process. Academic advising is a two-way street. We need to know what your educational and academic goals are in order to be able to point you in the right direction.
  • Be honest with your advisor if you have concerns or are struggling. We are ready are more than willing to help you find tutoring or support services available on campus and we can help plan your schedule to help you manage the course load.
  • Ask questions when you don't understand. This is your opportunity to get answers to your academic questions and/or concerns.
  • Take notes. You and your academic advisor may discuss a lot of information and you can use your notes to refer back to later.
  • Be respectful of the time of your advisors and other students. Try to stick to your scheduled appointment time, if you need more time you are welcome to schedule a follow-up appointment.

After your advising appointment, you should:

  • Review and create your class schedule based on the course recommendations provided so that you are ready for registration.
  • Review your notes and the materials given to you. Follow-up with recommended resources and actions suggested to you. If your advisor was going to find information for you, follow-up through email within three days of your appointment, unless otherwise stated in your appointment, or schedule a follow-up appointment if you have not heard from them.
  • Write down any questions you may still have for future appointments.

When should I schedule an appointment?

While the information below is not all inclusive for every situation a student will face it should help offer some guidelines for students to navigate the advising process. Please be aware that as advisors we are here for the students and adjustments are made on a case-by-case basis.

Registration

As registration deadlines approach the advisors schedules become more full and it is harder to get an appointment. You should plan ahead and schedule an appointment early so that you are prepared for the classes you need to take.
Some common problems with registration are holds on students accounts, pre-requisite or other course restrictions, full classes, missing your registration date and time, etc.

Graduation

If you are within two semesters of graduation, please request a graduation application. After you have completed the application, schedule an appointment to meet with your advisor to complete this application.

Academic Action

Please schedule an advising appointment with your advisor as soon as possible.
