Biography

I am a professor of Biological Engineering with a PhD in Biological Engineering, M.S. in Environmental Engineering, M.S. in Environmental Chemistry & Biology, and B.S. in Biology. I also have trained in the martial art of Aikido in North Carolina, California, and Chicago and am currently ranked as a 6th degree black belt (Rokudan) by the Aikido Association of America. I have also worked for Mobay Chemical Corporation, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the U.S. State Department, and for Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina.

I currently teach P.E. 1440 Introduction to Aikido, and in the College of Engineering I teach Biochemical Engineering and Capstone Engineering Design (3 semesters).

General Introduction. I integrate Aikido into engineering and engineering into Aikido at USU in my teaching, mentoring, advising, and research activities. I have served professionally on the Black Belt Testing Committee of the American Aikido Association, and currently serve as the faculty advisor of the ASUSU Aikido Club, which sponsors Aikido Workshops with visiting national instructors twice each academic year that is open to all USU students. I have also served as President of the Institute of Biological Engineering, and as the Founding Head of the Department of Biological Engineering at USU. I am the recipient of the D. Wynn Thorne Career Research Award at USU and of the Huntsman Corporation Endowed Professorship at USU. I am also a Fellow of the Institute of Biological Engineering and of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. I previously served as the Director of the Utah Water Research Laboratory and as the Head of the Division of Environmental Engineering at USU.
