Biography
Dr. Tzung-Shiang Ou is an assistant professor in Health Education and Promotion, holding a Ph.D. in Health Behavior from Indiana University-Bloomington. Previously, he worked as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department in Taiwan, where he observed the challenges faced by patients dealing with substance use and misuse, particularly those with mental health and domestic violence issues. He noticed social and structural barriers that these patients encountered when seeking treatment. These experiences ignited his passion for health behavior research, with a specific focus on substance use studies. As a trained health behavior educator and researcher, Dr. Ou is interested in applying theoretical approaches to his teaching and research. During his doctoral training at Indiana University-Bloomington, Dr. Ou received support from an NIH-funded R01 project. He served as a project coordinator in a longitudinal study that focused on conducting Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) with a measurement burst design among college student e-cigarette users. Dr. Ou is a member of the American Academy of Health Behavior.

Research Interests
Drawing upon his clinical background and research experiences, Dr. Ou's research portfolio encompasses various fields, including health determinants and mechanisms, trajectories of mental and behavioral problems, health policy, and health behaviors research. The primary focus of his research is the application of theory and quantitative methodology to investigate health behaviors and their developmental processes across the life course, with a specific emphasis on substance use/misuse and polysubstance use. Dr. Ou dedicates special attention to studying young adults, older adults, and individuals who have experienced stressful events, such as adverse childhood experiences and stressful life events.
