Biography

I choose to work in recreation because I want to provide opportunities for kids to learn, grow and have fun! I started as a soccer/basketball official, baseball umpire, and scorekeeper. I went to Snow College and transferred to Utah State to get a degree in Recreation Administration. I've worked in a parks department, on an events team, and with many sports programs. I'm now working in Nibley City to help plan all the youth sports programs. I'm a big fan of the Utah Jazz and Real Salt Lake.

Most meaningful thing learned or experienced during my times as a student:

Learning how to make a program plan was very helpful. My first internship had nothing more than pictures and random documents on what happened at the previous year's event. My supervisor told me to look through files on the computer and plan that year's event.
After a lot of work looking through files and asking lots of questions I finally understood what to do. I pulled out my program plan I had made for a college class and made a program plan for the event. I presented my idea to my boss and they were very impressed with my organizational skills. The event ran smoothly and now the next intern has a program plan to look through.

Advice for current students or recent graduates:

Do the assignments the right way and keep files of them. Knowing how to write a job description, work on a budget, do an interview, etc. is really helpful. Keep those files so you can pull them out and look through them when you are on the job.
