Learning Dynamics Lab
Our Work
We are a team of educators, designers, and learning scientists. We develop technology and instruction meant to leverage students' everyday thinking and we study how their thinking plays a productive role in their construction of more formal knowledge. We take an anti-deficit perspective, viewing students’ pre-instructional knowledge as a resource for learning and learning as a process of knowledge refinement. Across our work, we seek to honor and build on the individual ways of thinking students bring to their sense-making and learning.
Projects
Characterizing Student Theory Building
In this work, we are collaborating with middle school science teachers to develop computational modeling microworlds and instructional activities that support middle school students’ engagement in scientific theory building.
Refining Student Thinking through Theory Building in the Science Classroom
In this work, we are collaborating with middle school science teachers to develop instructional activities that engage middle school students in theory building practices that help them articulate, evaluate, and refine their thinking.
Interactive Physics Simulations for Intermediate Classical Mechanics
In this work, we are developing computational microworlds to support undergraduate student learning in intermediate classical mechanics.
