Biography

I am a professor in the Combined Clinical/Counseling PhD specialization in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University. The focus of my research is to develop effective treatments for problems of social importance. Therefore, my clinical interests are wide and not topographically based. I predominantly research treatments for adults but also work with children. To date, my research has focused on anxiety disorders, especially obsessive compulsive disorder and OC-spectrum disorders including Tourette’s Disorder, Trichotillomania, and chronic skin picking. I work in the areas of developmental disabilities, substance abuse, eating disorders, problematic pornography viewing, stigma and prejudice, and multicultural issues. I generally research treatments that are in the behavioral tradition, including contingency management and exposure-based therapies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. My work has two immediate aims: 1) to determine the effectiveness of particular treatment modalities, and 2) to determine the processes (mechanisms of action) through which treatments produce their effects. I completed my BA and MS at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where I specialized in behavior analysis. I earned my PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed my clinical internship at the University of British Columbia Hospital. I have an impressive scholarly record of publications, books, presentations, grants, and awards. I work with graduate and undergraduate students with clinical and/or research ambitions. I adhere to the junior colleague style of mentoring. If you are interested in working with me, please contact me to see if your goals overlap. I co-direct the USU ACT Research Group with Dr. Michael Levin. For more information visit https://www.utahact.com.
