What drew you to USU?
What drew me to USU was primarily the people and the ethos of the institution. The School Counseling program, in particular, stood out for its noble mission to serve and uplift the community in the State of Utah. The dedication to bettering the lives of individuals resonated deeply with my own values, making USU a perfect fit for me

What would you like the public and potential students to know about your research?
My research agenda emphasizes multiculturalism and mental health among underrepresented populations, as well as the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in counseling and supervision. Currently, I'm involved in several research teams, collaborating with esteemed researchers on studies concerning minoritized counselors and clients, K-12 students, and soldiers in military settings.

What is your mentorship philosophy?
As an educator, I am deeply rooted in a constructivist approach, emphasizing active listening and facilitation. It is vital to me that my students not only have their voices heard but also listen to the voices of others, thereby enriching their holistic learning experience. Thus, I prioritize establishing a safe and supportive learning environment where students can delve into their values, beliefs, and emotions, further enhancing their counseling competencies.

What advice do you have for students pursuing a PhD?
During your Ph.D. journey, please consider setting aside time for heartfelt self-reflection. I cherish the moments when I've paused to contemplate my past experiences, current position, and future aspirations. Taking this time not only helps fine-tune both personal and academic pursuits but also brings you closer to understanding your true self.

What do you love most about your job?
I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve students through my job. What's even more gratifying is that, upon graduation, my students venture out and become positive influences in the community, making meaningful differences in the world.
