Professional School Counselor Education Program moves to Broadcast Format

Beginning fall 2022, Utah State University’s nationally accredited master’s program in professional school counselor education will restructure its program delivery to be offered in a live and interactive web-based broadcast format.

In the past, the program has been delivered through two formats. During even-numbered years, students attended face-to-face courses at USU Kaysville. In odd-numbered years, students attended the program via USU’s statewide Interactive Video Conferencing (IVC) format at multiple sites across the state. This change in delivery will allow all years to access the program through a web broadcast format, which will utilize Zoom and asynchronous online courses.

“Professional School Counselors play a special role in our school systems,” said Dr. Scott Bates, Psychology department head. “It’s a role that is more important than ever, given the challenges facing our nation’s youth. The program at USU has a long history of fantastic success; we train incredible people to be astonishing school counselors. The changes that are coming will bring this program to more people, reach more places, and ultimately help more students.”

Dr. Jessica Koltz, director of the professional school counselor education program, shared Bates’s enthusiasm. “We are excited about moving to a web-based format," she said. "It is a great opportunity for Utah State University school counselors in training, as well as the state of Utah."

Once the new program is implemented, courses will be offered virtually via Zoom, and some may include an in-person component. Dr. Koltz recommends that interested students attend all in-person opportunities to support connections with their cohort members. The Professional School Counselor Education program utilizes statewide IVC broadcast sites that will be open to students if an at-home learning option is unavailable to them.

Applications for admission to the program must be completed by May 1, 2022. Those interested in learning more about the program may register to attend the virtual open house on Tuesday, March 22 at 05:00pm MDT to learn more about the program. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
