Internship

The Combined Clinical/Counseling (formerly the Combined Clinical/Counseling/School specialization) has placed 100% of its PhD graduates with an APA-accredited internship sites for many consecutive years. The School Psychology specialization placed 100% of its first class of PhD graduates in the match in 2021. The Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) coordinates the match with internship locations to help identify preferred applicants and for applicants to also identify their internships of choice. APPIC helps each site and student connect with their top choices, while maximizing the number of matches for all. Matches are announced annually in February.

My advice to other students is four parts: 1) Breathe. Ground yourself. 2) Know you are not alone in this process. People have made it through before you and will continue to make it through. Surround yourself with people who will ground you and help ease your anxieties. 3) Internship applications, interviews, ranking... it is a marathon, not a sprint. Make sure to take care of yourself. 4) Have faith in your abilities.

Now that I've been through the application process, I view internship as a year for processional development. From this perspective, internship became less daughting and more exciting.

I was nervous prior to interviews, however I also felt incredibly prepared. My clinical experiences, particularly at the Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment gave me excellent preparation and support prior to the interview process, so I felt confident that I could be myself and rely on my genuine self during that process.

My internship is at San Francisco General Hospital, a tier-1 trauma center and public hospital. This keeps me really busy. I’m doing comprehensive and developmental evaluations, doing outpatient services for children with PTSD, depression, and ADHD, and dyadic work with young children and their caregivers to address the effects of trauma.

I value learning for its own sake, and graduate school is the last opportunity we have to be dedicated learners. I tried to get everything out of the program that I could and learn as much as I could about things that mattered to me, even if that meant that sometimes I was not as productive as I thought I “should” be. In the end, it was these learning experiences that made my time in the program rich and led me to getting the job that I really wanted.
