PN Application Process

Complete Application

  • Complete a Utah State University (USU) Admissions Application and be accepted (if not currently enrolled or returning from a Leave of Absence). There is a $50 application fee.
    • Submit all official college transcripts (if transfer student); or high school or GED verification to USU Admissions.
    • TOEFL score is required for non-native English-speaking students.

Complete Prerequisites

Prerequisite course requirements must be completed with a grade of “B-” or better. Three course attempts for any one course will be accepted, with a maximum of 10 total repeats, including transfer or equivalent courses.
  • BIOL 2320 Human Anatomy
    • BIOL 2320 Laboratory recommended, not required***
  • BIOL 2420 Human Physiology (within 5 years of admission date)
    • BIOL 2420 Laboratory recommended, not required***
  • HDFS 1500 Human Development Across the Lifespan***
    • PSY 1010 General Psychology or
    • PSY 1100 Lifespan Development
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant certification

***If students plan to continue in the Associate of Applied Science (RN) program, it’s encouraged students talk with a nursing advisor to plan the following courses into their schedule

  • Chemistry
    • CHEM 1010 Introduction to Chemistry or
    • CHEM 1110 General Chemistry I and CHEM 1115 General Chemistry I Laboratory
      • CHEM 1115 Laboratory is recommended, not required***
  • ENGL 1010 Introduction to Writing: Academic Prose
  • NURS 2500 or BIOL 2520 Pathophysiology for Nursing
  • One Math QL***

*** If students plan to continue or advance their education by attending a graduate level nursing program, we highly encourage you to talk with your advisor as labs and specific courses are required. Complete online AAS application.

Complete online PN Application

  • Submit copy of receipt for non-refundable $30.00 application fee in PDF format.
  • Successful completion (75% or better) of the HESI A2 exam. Applicants are allowed two attempts per application cycle. Two weeks in between attempts is required. HESI A2 scores older than two years will not be accepted.
    • The HESI A2 will be taken at a USU testing center. Read instructions for registering with a USU testing center.
    • All students are required to complete all sections of the HESI A2 exam, except for the Physics section.
    • Elsevier offers a study guide to prepare for taking the HESI A2.
  • Submit Personal Statement, 2-page, double spaced, 12-point font in PDF format. Answer the following questions
    1. Why do you want to become a nurse?
    2. What are your short term and long-term goals in nursing?
    3. What are specific strategies that you will use to be successful in the nursing program?
  • Submit professional resume in PDF format.

Decision

Letters of acceptance/non-acceptance will be sent 6-8 weeks after application close date.

Accepting Position

If you accept a position in the PN Nursing program, you will read, understand, and agree to comply with the standards, requirements, and policies in the Nursing Student Handbook.
 

Applications will close at 11:59 p.m. on February 15, 2024.

Apply for scholarships prior to the May 1 deadline.

Meet Pre-clinical Requirements

Pre-clinical requirements due August 1st. Full instructions are provided with your acceptance letter:
  • Create or update your USU compliance management tool with American Databank (ADB)
  • Immunization records - start gathering documents early
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers certification
  • Urine drug screen and background check - initiated with your ADB/Complio account
  • Please have your immunization documents ready to upload when instructed in an upcoming email, specifically your Hepatitis B titer, which can take up to 6 months to complete.  It is critically important that you are immunization-compliant by August 1.
