HEDI PROGRAM

Welcome to USU! We’re excited you’re here, whether on campus or online. There are many new things to remember. But don’t worry, we are here to help!

Hi there, I am Jenny Kearl, and my email is: jenny.kearl@usu.edu.
My door, whether physical or a bit more virtual via phone or email, is always open. Please don’t be shy about reaching out. One of my favorite aspects of my job as your academic advisor and graduation program coordinator is interacting with students.
Our undergraduate program gives you a framework to work toward earning your Bachelor’s degree in Human  Experience Design Interaction (HEDI) program.

The HEDI major requires students to earn 12 credits in one area of emphasis and 9 credits in a second area of emphasis.  I’ll provide a brief overview of the items below. I have also tried to include when our HEDI classes are taught, such as (fall, spring, summer), but please be aware that in the emphasis areas, you will need to double-check when courses listed are taught outside of the ITLS department!

A bachelor’s degree requires a minimum of
120 credits.  Of these 120 credits, 40 credits must be upper division (numbered 3000 or above).  These 120 credits are divided into a few different categories:

General Education

General Education or Breadth courses consist of English Writing courses, a Quantitative (stats) course, and 6 categories of breadth courses. In order to complete the general education requirements, students must successfully complete a minimum of one course in each of these areas:

Let’s talk about your first semester and getting started. You may have some concurrent enrollment or AP courses completed, in progress, or be starting with a blank slate on your college transcript.  Let’s see if we can answer your questions and get your first-semester schedule all settled.

You’ve likely gone over general education in your orientation modules, but now we’re going to dig deeper into it as it pertains to you.

If you have taken Engl 1010 or AP Lang (and passed with a 3+), you can skip this paragraph and/or see if there is an Engl 2010 seat to sign up for. If not, consider adding Engl 1010 to your schedule plan.

Math or Quantitative Literacy, as it’s called in general education. HEDI majors are required to complete any of the QL courses listed in the USU catalog.  If you have already completed a QL class or AP Math/Stat course in high school, you can skip this section. If you haven’t completed your math, you’ll likely need to take the ALEKS math placement exam. You can find out how to do that here: https://www.usu.edu/mathprep/aleks-ppl

You’ll need to earn a 14+ to enroll in Stat 1045 or 30+ to enroll in Stat 1040 or 1080. You won’t be able to enroll in the Stat class until you have a “passing” score on the ALEKS.

You may have already completed this requirement with AP Drawing, Music Theory, or with concurrent enrollment in Music 1010. If not, consider adding a BCA course to your schedule plan. You can find a list of BCA options by clicking on the BCA hyperlink on your degreeworks.  You can also search for BCA courses in the registration system by doing an advanced search and typing BCA in the attribute box.

You may have already completed this requirement with AP Art History, European History, or World History, or with concurrent enrollment in CMST 2110 or Engl 2200. If not, consider adding a BHU course to your schedule plan. You can find a list of BHU options by clicking on the BHU hyperlink on your degreeworks.

You can also search for BHU courses in the registration system by doing an advanced search and typing BHU in the attribute box.

You may have already completed this requirement with AP Biology, Environmental Science, or with concurrent enrollment in NDFS 1020- Human Nutrition. If not, consider adding a BLS course to your schedule plan. You can find a list of BLS options by clicking on the BLS hyperlink on your degreeworks.

You can also search for BLS courses in the registration system by doing an advanced search and typing BLS in the attribute box.

You may have already completed this requirement with AP Chem, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C, or Computer Science Principles, or with concurrent enrollment in Chem 1010. If not, consider adding a BPS course to your schedule plan. You can find a list of BPS options by clicking on the BPS hyperlink on your degreeworks.

You can also search for BPS courses in the registration system by doing an advanced search and typing BPS in the attribute box.

You may have already completed this requirement with AP Comparative Gov & Politics, Human Geography, Microeconomics, or Psychology, or with concurrent enrollment in HDFS 1500 or Psy 1010. AND you may have already completed this requirement with AP Macroeconomics, U.S. Government & Politics, or U.S. History, or with concurrent enrollment Econ 1500 or History 1700. If not, consider adding a BAI course to your schedule plan. You can find a list of BAI options by clicking on the BAI hyperlink on your degreeworks.
