Dr. Rebecca Utz, Ph.D., professor of sociology and associate dean of research at the University of Utah, is studying whether Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are linked to divorce. The research examines how dementia symptoms or financial strain from medical costs may contribute to marital breakdown. Findings could inform targeted support for couples, such as relationship therapies or surrogate decision-making, and guide policy changes to reduce financial pressures that lead to “medical divorce.”
