Ramy Shaaban is a medical doctor with a PhD degree in Communications Media and Instructional Technology. When Dr. Shaaban obtained his medical degree, he realized that improving the way medical students acquire the needed knowledge is more needed than working at a hospital, taking into consideration his talents in technological innovations.

Ramy's research interests include, but are not limited to, exploring the impact of emerging technologies on learning in the educational field. He, specifically, believes that gamification and game-based learning, aided with scaffolding and collaborative learning, are the gateways to future learning styles and students’ preferences. Ramy also works on applying for grants to fund learning games labs.

On the personal level, Ramy spends his spare time playing virtual reality (VR) games using Oculus Quest, exploring the fun of the new technologies, and contemplating the future of learning with technology.

Featured Work

Simulation Lab - Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Ramy was able to secure a grant for the Department of Communications Media at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to build a VR simulation lab. Ramy used the VR equipment he got to develop two undergraduate classes in virtual reality and VR game development. The VR equipment was also used to engage students in producing VR content as parts of the department’s recruitment and retention plan.

Audiometry and Clinical Audiology Simulation

This project was an initiative to develop a new concept of virtual patients. Audiometry and Clinical Audiology Simulation is an online program that gives students access to virtual audiology cases and virtual audiometry. The project was the main instrument in Dr. Shaaban’s Dissertation. Unlike other online virtual patients, this program has embedded scaffolding and collaborative tools that aim to enhance students’ clinical reasoning skills.

IUP-ASERT, ACT for Autism Online Interactive Course

The IUP-ASERT Collaborative is a grant venture with the Autism Services, Education, Resources, and Training Collaborative (ASERT), which is funded by the Bureau of Autism Services and the Office of Development Programs, Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. In this project, Ramy designed and developed online interactive modules for first responders to learn how to deal with people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Alexandria College of Medicine - Students’ Portal

Ramy designed and developed the student portal of Alexandria College of Medicine. In this portal, students have all the academic services in the college centered in one online portal. Through this portal, students have access to their performance throughout their presence in the medical school. They have access to academic resources, online courses, syllabi, and external medical resources. They also have access to their advisors, professors, and staff members of the college.

Alexandria Virtual Medical School

Ramy, along with other team members in Alexandria College of Medicine designed and developed a simulation-based project called Alexandria Virtual Medical School. This project aimed to give students a simulation experience of their clinical education by providing them with virtual clinical cases. This project was awarded the Khalifa Award for the best innovative educational project in the Middle East.

Research Focus

Ramy’s focus is in the new Bachelor of Human Experience Design and Interaction. Specifically, he focuses on video game design and multimedia design through human-centered approaches. Ramy also focuses on preparing students to the workforce by building new connections, and collaborations within and outside USU. Preparing the technical skills of the students and establishing a network of internships, and jobs for recent graduates of the program are his major interests.
