Emphasis
A current initiative in Dr. Kozlowski’s classroom is using birding as an integrated topic to teach all academic subjects. Through this, students become active learners and make connections between learning at home, at school, and in their communities.
Expertise
Dr. Kozlowski’s is an expert in providing elementary students and pre-service teachers rich educational and mathematical experiences that support problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.
Biography
Joseph Kozlowski, Ph.D., is a teacher and researcher at Edith Bowen Laboratory School. He is passionate about supporting early childhood development as well as pre-service teacher development. Providing students rich experiences (e.g., outdoor, technological, social, physical) is a fundamental component of his instruction style and he believes it supports deep future connections for learning. His research focus revolves around mathematics and computer science education. He is primarily interested in how students think about mathematics creatively, and how coding toys and interfaces support mathematical and computational thinking.
