Friends of Edith Bowen Laboratory School

"There was a child went forth every day, and first object he look'd upon, that object he became."

Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

Friends of Edith Bowen Laboratory School has three objectives--to support the process of purchasing and implementing technology for students and teachers, to support place-based outdoor learning opportunities for students, and to develop and fund our new interactive playground.

Ryker Dattage Outdoor Education

Ryker Dattage was an Edith Bowen alumnus who was involved in a fatal auto accident the summer after he graduated from high school in 2014. One of Ryker’s lifetime highlights was participating in the annual four-day Teton Science School experience in Grand Teton National Park--a crowning event for our fifth grade students. The Edith Bowen PTA and Ryker’s parents developed the Ryker Dattage Outdoor Education Fund to honor Ryker's memory by making outdoor experiential learning opportunities, such as Teton Science School, possible for future students, regardless of their family’s financial standing. Place-based learning is an important part of Edith Bowen Laboratory School.

We are actively seeking financial contributions to continue to make powerful outdoor learning experiences possible for our students. In addition to Teton Science School, the Ryker Dattage Outdoor Education Fund supports a variety of outdoor experiential learning opportunities for our students such as the Providence Canyon field experience, the Antelope Island field experience, our service learning partnership with Hardware Ranch Elk Refuge, and the 6th Grade San Juan River capstone field expereince.

In January 2016, the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation donated $50,000 for various technology enhancements for classrooms. The Herzstein Foundation generously provided a $17,500 donation for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, supercharging the Ryker Dattage Outdoor Education Fund. We are always in need of donations to enable us to provide quality experiences for our students. To make a contribution please contact our Business Manager, Jennifer Barton.
