New York City Charter School Tour (2023)

The USU’s Center for the School of the Future team and representatives of Davis, Tooele, and Cache County School Districts, along with representatives from Wallace Stegner Academy, American Preparatory Academy and the University of Utah traveled together to New York City (NYC) to investigate the incredible student academic learning results being achieved in NYC’s Success Academy (SA) charter schools. In total, approximately 32 Utahn’s participated. The majority of this group were exposed to SA’s learning system for the first time. A smaller group returned to SA to better understand the supports provided by SA’s network office, and how the identified supports articulated with SA’s within school supports to produce strong student academic learning outcomes. Both teams were able to unearth even more information clarifying how such high levels of learning are being achieved by SA, and with sufficient understanding that they could bring broad principles and specific practices back to Utah for implementation. Further investigations of SA will occur in the latter part of 2023 and in 2024.
