The purpose of Teacher Academy Schools (TAS)
schools is to provide a pathway to teaching through an embedded field experience in school settings as a central part in teacher preparation programs. In this innovative teacher pathway, preservice teachers earn university credit with a Learn & Earn option that offers the possibility of a paid practicum as a member of an instructional team while students earn their degree (dependent on available funds). In TAS schools, university classes are offered at the school site, and preservice teachers are placed in K-6 classrooms multiple days a week. These schools are models of innovative pathways to teaching and provide pre-service teachers opportunities to apprentice in K-6 classrooms with trained mentor teachers. TAS is designed to provide an apprenticeship with increased hands-on experiences for students before they begin student teaching. The TAS school-university partnership helps universities bridge the gap from university academic coursework to classroom practice. TAS schools have more instructional supports in their classrooms with a smaller teacher-to-student ratio, and more child-to-adult interactions.
