What do a nationally recognized infant psychologist, a sport psychologist for the Olympics and one of Ohio's top lawyers have in common? They all graduated from the Delaware City School District.

On Monday, Oct. 5. Loraine

Bahrick (1971), Richard D. Gordin II (1969) and Anthony M. Heald (1967) were inducted into the district's Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor. Each inductee will be part of a permanent display located near the main office at Hayes High School.

"Our primary goal is to recognize the outstanding achievements of the alumni," said Jen Ruhe, the district's director of communications and organizer of the program. "We also really want the students to see that graduates from Delaware have made some incredible accomplishments."

The candidates were honored during a ceremony held at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 in front of the entire freshman class and other selected groups. Bahrick could not attend due to a professional commitment.

Bahrick currently is a professor of psychology and director of the Infant Development Research Center at Florida International University. Areas of interest include development of attention, perception, learning and memory in infancy and early childhood, as well as autism in children. Her research has appeared in numerous journals and she has been awarded federal research grants for her studies.

Gordin is a professor in the department of health, physical education and recreation and an adjunct psychology professor at Utah State University. Organizations he has consulted for include the PGA tour and several USA national teams including serving as a psychologist for the women's gymnastics team in the 1988 Olympics and a consultant for track and field team for the 2004 Olympics.

Practicing law since 1974, Heald has been a fixture in local, state and federal cases throughout Ohio. He also has served as special counsel for two state attorney generals and was selected as one of Ohio's top lawyers in 2009 by Columbus CEO magazine. Outside the courtroom, Heald has been active in the Delaware Planning Commission, the United Way of Delaware County, the district's school board and various youth organizations.

Heald, who has lived in Delaware his entire life except while attending law school, said the ceremony was an excellent chance for students to see how accomplishments of Delaware graduates can affect the world. Still, he said he felt humbled by his own recognition.

"I think there's many people more worthy than me, but I feel honored," he said.

Ruhe said this year a six-person committee composed of three staff members and three alumni had to choose from 19 applicants.

"With any committee, everyone brought to the table their top candidates, and what's nice is you always have your top three to five rise to the top," Ruhe said. "We have a lot of quality candidates from the district and it makes it difficult to choose the best, but it's also exciting to know we'll have great candidates in the upcoming years."

The district is always accepting nominations for future inductions. Nomination forms can be picked up at the Administrative Building, 248 N. Washington St., or downloaded at the district's Web site, dcs.k12.oh.us, by clicking on the "Alumni Hall of Honor" link found under "Our District" on the top of the page. The deadline for 2010 is April 15 and applications are held for three years.
