The Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation at Utah State University is committed to continuous improvement to its curriculum, interaction with students and relationships with alumni and professional organizations. Each academic program has established learning objectives which outline the core competencies for that discipline. Health Education adheres to the competencies of the Certified Health Educator Specialist (CHES) sponsored by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC); Physical Education-Teacher Education addresses standards established by the National Association of Physical Education (NASPE), and Parks & Recreation Management is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) sponsored by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).
Mission Statement
The Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department (HPER) fosters multiple roles and best practices in science-based academic and field-engaged career preparation in school health education, community health education, physical education teacher preparation, coaching certification, exercise science, corporate wellness, pre-physical therapy, and parks and recreation administration. These majors are content rich, laboratory supported and field based, resulting in high quality, professional association-accredited and solution-focused curricula.

Mission Statement- Graduate Programs in HPER
The mission of the Graduate Programs in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is preparing qualified professionals in our academic disciplines. Our broad mission includes teaching by providing the highest quality graduate professional preparation program, while extending into the community when appropriate, and to provide the hightest quality instruction, advisement, and faculty-student interaction. Research is an important component of our graduate program mission. We intend to incorporate research, scholarly, and creative activity into the HPER student's total learning experience. We also encourage and provide an enhancing environment for participation in research, scholarly activity, and creative endeavors. We maintain local, regional, and national visibility in research activities. Our service mission entails providing quality outreach in the State of Utah and providing consultation to our extended region.
