Teacher Education (K-12)
The Physical Education Teaching major provides a program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. This major is designed to prepare students for teaching positions in grades K-12. Major requirements include classes in professional development, skill development, teaching/coaching methods, and the selection of a teaching minor.
Mission Statement and Objectives
The mission of the Physical Education Teaching Curriculum is to prepare qualified pre-service teachers for a successful career in teaching. The undergraduate program recognizes its responsibility to the community and state to continue its reputation of producing highly professional and qualified physical educators. To accomplish this mission, this curriculum area creates an environment for students to meet the following objectives:
To promote the true meaning of a physically educated person by promoting the development of the major's physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being.
To gain a basic understanding of the functions of the body as they apply to exercise and the principles underlying physical movement.
To develop pedagogical skills, including situations involving diverse social, psychological, cultural, behavioral, and special populations.
To develop a personal, lifelong commitment to physical activity and the promotion of the health benefits of physical activity.
To develop competency in a diverse number of skills that promote sport and physical education proficiency.
To understand the need and use of test and measurement skills as they apply to physical education.
